Touch the Nature at Lake Bohinj
“Still and quiet”
Lake Bohinj might not be the most known lake in Slovenia since it quietly hides in the shadow of the world-renowned Lake Bled. But if you are not an ordinary tourist looking for a famous background for a selfie, you will take a 30-minute ride further up into the heart of Slovenian Alps to find a perfect piece of nature’s artistry.
Untouched and serene, Lake Bohinj lies in a scenic glacial valley, embraced by steep mountains of Triglav National Park (named after Mount Triglav, 2864 m, the highest mountain in Slovenia) and quiet villages is a superb place to unwind and relax. A 4-km long lake with small “private” beaches and a trekking path all along its 10-km shore is a perfect place for outdoor activities from walking, mountain biking, swimming and, of course, standup paddling.
A cool place in summer
The Alpine climate makes the lake and the surroundings a perfect place to cool down in hot summer days. Tempting water temperatures of around 23ºC (73ºF) make it hard to resist jumping in for a swim, especially after a paddling session, or returning down the mountain after a whole-day hiking trip.
Exploring The Savica River
And if the lake temperature gets too high for your taste, there is always a cooler place just around the corner. At the western tip of the lake you can challenge yourself in the freezing-cold water of The Savica River (about 7ºC (45ºF). The river is the source of the water to the Lake Bohinj, coming straight down through the mountains as The Savica Waterfall that can be seen from the lake when there is enough water. In such conditions the crystal-clear Savica River can be paddled upstream, offering a spectacular glide on the green-to-gold-coloured water.
Taste the Bohinj Trout
If you are looking for a place to relax and regain strength for paddling back there is a great Restaurant at The Guesthouse Erlah just a few hundred meters upstream from the mouth of The Savica River. They offer a veriety of dishes, from local to international, but it would be a pity not to try their speciality – a fresh, grilled Bohinj trout. A must try! Especially if you believe that it gives you the instinct to navigate safely through the shallows of The Savica River back downstream to Lake Bohinj 😉
A hike to The Savica Waterfall
Lake Bohinj is a popular starting point of many hiking trails wandering up the mountains of Triglav National Park, including the hike to The Savica Waterfall (approx. 4 km from the lake). Lake Bohinj has numerous inflows, the most important one is the Savica. Its water bursts from the underground of the Dolina sedmerih jezer (The Seven Triglav Lakes Valley) in the walls of Komarča as Savica Waterfall.
A winter fairy tale
In winter, Lake Bohinj shows its other side of beauty. In freezing-cold Alpine winters it transforms into an idyllic fairy-tale scene. Gliding on the mirror-like surface, watching the sky below you and the snowy mountains all around is a one-of-a-kind experience that drives me to Lake Bohinj numerous times every winter. There are good chances you will be alone on the lake.

Alpine Dairy Farming Museum
There are many interesting things to do and see around Lake Bohinj. One of them is surely a visit to the Alpine Dairy Farming Museum just a few min ride from the lake. There you can take a look back in the past through the history of herding and alpine dairy farming in Bohinj as a way of life and coexistence with nature in an alpine environment.
The hayracks of Studor village
And there is another sight in the neighbourhood worth seeing – the hayracks of the Studor village. Here you can see a traditional wooden double hayracks, called toplars. Besides for drying hay they were (and some still are) used for storing hay on the upper storey and farming tools underneath. The Studor hayracks are not baroquely luxurious like the toplars from the Dolenjska region, but they are masterfully crafted.
